ABSTRACT Forty eight crossbred calves, 24 males and 24 females, with weight and age of 203.6±3.7kg and 11.8±1.0 months were allotted to the following treatments: MT- mineral salt ad libitum and sugar cane mixed with 10g kg-1 mixture of urea and ammonium sulfate in a 9:1 proportion; MA - sugar cane mixed with 16g kg-1 of a concentrate of urea (550g kg-1), ammonium sulfate (60g kg-1) and minerals (390g kg-1); SU - sugar cane mixed with 50g kg-1 of a concentrate of soybean meal (830g kg-1), urea (52g kg-1) and minerals (118g kg-1) and MC - corn silage mixed with 10g kg-1 of a concentrate of urea (500g kg-1), ammonium sulfate (50g kg-1) and minerals (450g kg-1). Minerals mixed with sugar cane (MA) resulted in greater weight gain (0.258 x 0.188kg d-1) for... |

The clinical picture of sulphur (S) deficiency is described by the first time in Brazilian dairy calves. Twelve crossbred six-month-old weaned dairy calves, reared on pasture of S-deficient Brachiaria decumbens, were used. The calves were randomly assigned in two groups of six calves each to verify the influence of S supplementation on some clinical and serum biochemical variables. All animals were fed a basal-supplement mix containing macro and microlements, urea and ground corn grain added (41gS/kg) or not of S (elemental S; 1g S/kg), for six months. At the end of the experiment, the S-supplemented calves had higher mean body weight (p < 0.01), body condition score (p < 0.016), serum inorganic sulphate concentration (p < 0.001) and serum albumin... |

Two hundred and five Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves with diarrhea from mid-western Brazil were screened for the presence of virulence factors associated with bovine colibacillosis. One hundred and two (49.8%) of the E. coli strains produced toxins: Shiga toxins 1 (9.7%) and 2 (6.3%), a-hemolysin (9.7%), enterohemolysin(6.8%), Cytotoxic Necrotizing Factors type 1 (0.5%), and type 2 (4.4%), enterotoxins LT-II (8.3%) and STa (3.9%). No strain produced enterotoxin LT-I. Fimbrial adhesins F5 and F17 were produced by 7.3% and 4.8% of the strains, respectivly, and none expressed F41. Seven strains (3.4%) possessed the gene eae and belonged to serotypes O26:H-; O111:H- and O118:H16. These results suggest that calves in Brazil may be an important... |
